Carl Hiaasen (1953-) is a journalist who writes a weekly column for the Miami Herald as well as novels, children's books and nonfiction. Hiaasen grew up in south Florida and graduated from the University of Florida. All of his books are set in the south Florida area. Hiaasen is considered to be the quintessential Florida author as his writing is heavily influenced by actual events that occur in the area.
