Marine biologist Sylvia Earle— known as "Her Deepness" or "The Sturgeon General"—has been an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society since 1998. Named Time magazine's first "hero for the planet," Earle has pioneered research on marine ecosystems. Earle has written more than 125 scientific and popular publications. Earle has a bachelor's degree from Florida State University, a Ph.D. from Duke University, and 12 honorary doctorate degrees. Earle lives in Oakland, California
