Walter M. Miller was born and raised in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He attended the University of Tennessee and then served in the US Air Force in World War II. Upon returning after war, Miller studied at the University of Texas for engineering, but never graduated. Miller wrote many short stories, but only published one novel. A Canticle of Liebowitz was his only novel and most well known work.
